Inside this course · Your tutor
I'm looking at a 50/50 sharemilking job. What is the biggest financial difference between that and a contract milking role?
The main difference is who owns the assets and carries the risk. In a contract milking role, you're paid a set rate per kilogram of milksolids. With a 50/50 sharemilking agreement, you typically own the herd and receive half the milk income, but you also pay for half the farm's operating costs. Your income is directly tied to the milk price and farm performance. We can look at how to budget for each.

The first weeks are the foundation, not a warm-up

The first weeks in the home are not a warm-up phase, they are the foundation. The guidance we give owners during this window can prevent months of remedial work later, making early intervention one of the most powerful tools we have as trainers.

More from students

“I love that it has different ways to learn! I'll keep learning about each flower's conditioning needs — I feel I've learnt so much already.”

Tammie O. · Verified student

“Very informative, and I like the focus on clients. It's better to give advice in small segments — just as we do with our dogs. Small steps.”

John H. · Verified student

“Real world responses — wow. The laws, and what it means to run a facility, is an eye opener. Even the less-common-pets section was eye opening — rabbits are illegal to keep as pets here in Queensland!”

Good to know

Common Questions.

Who is this course designed for?+
This course suits people already working on dairy farms who want to step into a management role, as well as those new to the industry who want a solid grounding in how NZ dairy works. It also fits sharemilkers, contract milkers, and farm owners who want to sharpen their business and operational skills. No formal qualifications are needed to enrol.
What topics does the course cover?+
The course covers 10 areas of dairy farm management, including herd health, pasture and feed systems, milking technology, breeding and reproduction, environmental compliance, and farm business finance. You will also learn about NZ-specific topics like the He Waka Eke Noa emissions framework, Fonterra and co-op structures, sharemilking arrangements, and employment law for farm employers. There are 100 lessons in total.
Do I need experience on a dairy farm before starting?+
No prior experience is required, though the course is most useful if you have some exposure to farming or are actively working in the industry. The content builds from the basics of how a NZ dairy farm operates right through to financial planning, capital decisions, and leading a farm team. If you are brand new to dairy, the early modules will give you strong context before the more advanced content.
How long will it take to complete?+
The course is self-paced, so the timeline is up to you. The estimated study time is 259 hours at a comfortable pace. If you want to move faster, a focused fast-track approach can get you through in around 32 hours. You have 12 months of access, and extensions are available on request.
What certificate will I receive, and is it recognised?+
You will receive an Advanced Certificate in Dairy Farm Management NZ, issued by Modern Education New Zealand and endorsed by ICOES (International Council for Online Educational Standards). This is not a qualification registered with NZQA, and it is different from a polytechnic or PTE qualification. Many employers and industry contacts will see it as a signal of initiative and applied knowledge, but whether it meets a specific employer's requirements is something to check directly with them.
How is this different from watching YouTube videos or reading DairyNZ resources?+
Free resources are useful, but they are scattered and not structured around a learning path. This course organises 100 lessons across 10 modules in a logical sequence, covering everything from NAIT and MINDA records to nutrient management plans and the equity ladder from farm worker to farm owner. Each lesson also includes an AI tutor you can ask specific questions, which is a different experience from browsing articles.
